Joiners' Quarterly
JQ Back Issue

Joiners' Quarterly was published from 1983 to 2000. In all, 38 issues were published. JQ chronicles the revival of timber framing in America as no other source does. The first issue, published in 1983, set the editorial focus: How do we build as craftsmen? Technical articles on Timber framing, Traditional & Natural Building Systems make up the core of the editorial content, and did so long before they became buzzwords of the day. You will find no other source that offers such in-depth, how-to information about timber framing and traditional building systems and why these systems still make sense today.

"Just a quick email to let you know I received my order of your complete back issue set... I have been meaning to drop you an e-mail to let you know... but I have had trouble in pulling myself away from your amazing publications. It not only explores both the practical and finer points of timber framing but also embraces a wide range of interesting and cross related subjects. Keep up the good work..."
—Tony Lake, Inverness-Shire, UK

Timber Framing Mallets

TimberFramingMallets1aThese mallets are hand turned from a variety of different hardwoods found in the San Luis Valley of Costa Rica, where we have been working with the local community for the past 10 years through our IPCBI workshop program. The mallets are hand turned by community members to the proper weight and balance to meet Fox Maple specs.

A good mallet will prevent fatigue and possible wrist injury that may arise from using a mallet not designed to meet the needs of heavy timber work with a framing chisel. The key is to hold the mallet lightly in hand and let the mallet do the work and not your arm or wrist. This requires the correct balance between handle thickness, length and weight. All of the mallets are hand-turned from a variety of tropical hardwoods species salvaged from dead tree limbs, old fence posts and even community members firewood piles.

Due to the varying density and weight of any specific wood specie, each mallet will vary in size, weight and length most suitable for the specific wood used. Sizes range from 16 to 18 inches in length, 2-1/2 to 3 inch head diameter and from 2.5 to 3 pounds. Because the wood is salvaged, some mallets may have slight blemishes as any recycled wood may have. Checks may also appear due to the change in climate, however, these will not affect the use or the life span of the mallet. Each mallet is essentially made to order, so please allow up to 3 to 4 weeks for delivery. For students planning to attend a Fox Maple workshop we recommend ordering at the time of registration and having it waiting for you when you arrive at the workshop. This will save shipping costs. $75 plus $12.95 S&H in US.
